Ledcor installed a critical river water intake pipeline and underground utility network to support the LNG Canada facility in Kitimat, BC. This project established a 2.5 km (1.55 mi) utility right-of-way that connects the Kitimat River pumphouse to the main project site, providing the essential water and communications infrastructure necessary for the facility’s long-term operations.
The infrastructure featured a 762 mm (30 in) HDPE pipeline alongside high-voltage power cables and a 48-strand fiber optic backbone. To navigate the complex terrain, the team utilized advanced trenchless technologies, including guided horizontal auger bores and micro-tunneling for road crossings. These specialized methods allowed for precise installation up to 7.5 m (25 ft) below grade, showcasing Ledcor’s ability to implement sophisticated engineering solutions in a constrained industrial corridor.
The project involved 2.5 km (1.55 mi.) of utility installation through both open-cut trenching and specialized boring. Key components included 6.9 kV underground power cables, fiber optic integration, and five underground cased road crossings.
A primary challenge involved managing approximately 40 utility crossings and proximity instances along the route. This required extensive coordination and interfacing with multiple third-party stakeholders, including provincial commissions and various utility providers. Ledcor’s project team successfully navigated these complexities to ensure technical accuracy and safety while maintaining the project schedule.
