LS Barrie Constructors, led by Ledcor, successfully completed a 3 km expansion of the Barrie Rail Corridor in King City, enhancing infrastructure to support a second track along the Newmarket subdivision. This project delivered critical upgrades to improve rail reliability, safety, and future electrification readiness, all while minimizing disruptions to active rail operations.

The Barrie Railway Corridor Enabling Works project focused on widening the existing rail corridor to accommodate a second track. Key components and achievements included:

    • Earthworks and Drainage: 3 km of grading, drainage, and sub-ballast installation to prepare the corridor for the new track. Ledcor conducted geotechnical investigations to assess the suitability of existing materials for reuse as fill. By developing a materials management plan, the team maximized the use of native materials, significantly reducing the need for off-site disposal and imported granular materials.
    • Culvert Upgrades: Replacement of four culverts (up to 2 m in diameter) and extension of five others to address flooding issues. The existing culverts were undersized, damaged, or blocked, causing flooding in the rail corridor and nearby properties. Ledcor replaced four culverts and extended five others during carefully planned time periods to ensure no impact on regular rail operations. New headwalls were also installed to enhance durability.
    • Bridge Strengthening: Ledcor constructed two new crash walls and reinforced two existing ones at the Bathurst bridge to meet modern safety standards. Additionally, 52 micro-piles were installed through existing bridge footings to strengthen the structure, all without disrupting rail or vehicle traffic.
    • Retaining Wall: To accommodate the second track, Ledcor excavated a section of the corridor and installed a 100 m H-pile and precast concrete lagging retaining wall. This work was completed adjacent to the active track without interrupting rail services, preserving operational continuity.
    • Electrification and Safety: Electrical raceway construction, grounding, bonding, and a high-security fence along the corridor to prepare for future electrification and secure the area.
    • Track and Signal Work: Ledcor completed track removals and replacements during four track block weekends, finishing ahead of schedule each time to ensure Monday morning rail operations resumed without delay. Signal modifications, power supply upgrades, and the installation of a controlled pedestrian crossing for a nearby school further enhanced safety and functionality.

The Barrie Railway Corridor Enabling Works project has enhanced the reliability and safety of the rail line while preparing it for future electrification. By completing all work with minimal disruption to rail services and delivering cost-saving innovations, Ledcor demonstrated exceptional efficiency and expertise, ensuring the project’s success for Metrolinx and the surrounding community. The project was completed in October 2022.
