    1. Slurry Walls 1

Ledcor constructed a bentonite barrier for Chevron Corporation in Kitimat, BC, ensuring the long-term structural integrity and environmental safety of the site. The project provided a secure subsurface containment system and reinforced access infrastructure, supporting the client’s industrial requirements in a sensitive geographical area.

The approach used a specialized cutter soil mixing method to create a barrier measuring approximately 18,500 sq m (199,132 sq ft) with depths reaching up to 20 m (66 ft). To enhance the finished project’s durability, the barrier was capped with a unique geogrid and gravel combination to maintain the road’s bearing capacity. The scope also included an intricate drainage system featuring 300 mm (12 in) perforated piping and manhole connections to existing landfill infrastructure.

A primary challenge was the immediate proximity of fish-bearing water courses, which required rigorous environmental management. Ledcor implemented and maintained strict soil erosion and sedimentation controls throughout the construction process. By managing an excess soil containment area and protecting existing monitoring wells, the project team delivered the works without impacting the local ecosystem.

This project was completed in November 2020 and totaled 35,000 work hours.
