Saskatoon Public Library's (SPL) new Central Library is designed as a welcoming space that brings learning, culture, and community connection together under one roof. The four-storey hybrid mass timber and concrete structure features a tipi-inspired curtainwall and an open-concept interior, where exposed glulam and cross-laminated timber reflect the form and warmth of Métis log homes.
The use of CLT is uncommon for a public building of this scale and supports the sustainable design. The library will include flexible public spaces, program rooms, collections, services, a café, and dedicated areas for gathering, creating, studying, and storytelling. Outside, the design extends into public green space with a central plaza and amenities for cyclists and pedestrians.
SPL will be seeking Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification. Ledcor provided pre-construction services and collaborated with key subcontractors through a design-assist approach to help align the project’s vision with its budget and execution plan.
