Construction on the Suncor Fort Hills site, 90 km north of Fort McMurray, began in 2008 and included the piling scope contract for the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Approximately 469 H-Piles (12 inches wide), foundations were installed to support numerous applications such as tanks and pump pedestals.

Construction resumed in April 2012 after the project was put on hold in 2008. Ledcor provided pipeline and conduits, mechanical, civil, structural and architectural, electrical, and instrumentation services for the early works/site infrastructure build out which included:

  • Raw water intake
  • Water treatment plant
  • Waste water treatment plant
  • Natural gas conditioning
  • Electrical power distribution system
  • Utility pipelines
  • Fibre optics

The southwest area contains the temporary river intake pumps on the east bank of the Athabasca River, where raw water is drawn into the Water Treatment Plant and the adjacent Waste Water Treatment Plant. The northeast area of the site is characterized by the camp infrastructure and future mine infrastructure. Ledcor’s scope included construction of a 9 km pipeline corridor joining the two areas to transport natural gas, potable water, and wastewater.

Project Highlights

The Suncor Fort Hills Project reported zero Health, Safety & Environmental recordable incidents during 2012, resulting in a Total Recordable Incident Frequency of zero for the year.
