Ledcor is currently making significant strides on two major transit projects: the Surrey Langley SkyTrain Project in Surrey, British Columbia and the Capital Line South LRT Extension in Edmonton, Alberta. Exemplifying a ‘One Ledcor’ approach, these projects unite multiple divisions—including Infrastructure, Foundations, and Building—to deliver high-quality, sustainable transportation solutions that enhance public transportation and community connectivity.
The Province of British Columbia’s Surrey Langley Skytrain Project is a 16-km (10-mi) extension of the existing Expo Line, running primarily along Fraser Highway from King George Station in Surrey to 203 Street in Langley City Centre. This expansion will introduce eight stations, three transit exchanges, and nine propulsion power substations. Ledcor—as part of the SkyLink Guideway Partners consortium alongside FlatironDragados Canada, SYSTRA International Bridge Technologies, McElhanney, Rizzani de Eccher, and Con-Force Structures Ltd.—is designing, building, and financing the elevated guideway, associated roadworks, utilities, and active transportation elements under a Design-Build-Finance model.
The scope of the project involves building deep foundations and concrete structures like pile caps and piers. The elevated guideway will be constructed using precast concrete segments, erected with four specialized launching gantries. A custom facility in Surrey’s Campbell Heights has been built to manufacture these concrete segments. The project also includes installing an underground power conduit system, upgrading Fraser Highway, adding a new multi-use path for walking and biking, relocating utilities, and managing traffic with new streetlights and signals.
Our integrated planning and scheduling approach has helped optimize the project schedule. Early collaboration across design, procurement, and construction has enabled precise task sequencing and real-time adjustments to site conditions.
Set for completion in late 2029, the Surrey Langley SkyTrain will serve 56,000 daily riders, increasing to 80,000 by 2050. The guideway portion of the project will employ more than 900 employees at peak construction. This project is a significant milestone for Metro Vancouver, aiming to enhance public transportation and regional connectivity.
The Capital Line South LRT Extension in Edmonton is a 4.5-km (3-mi) extension south of Century Park station to Ellerslie Road, integrating into Edmonton’s longest-running existing LRT line. Ledcor was selected as the contractor for this design-build project, with AECOM as the design partner.
The Capital Line Extension is a turn-key project where Ledcor is delivering all elements of the project, including an underpass at 23 Avenue, bridge crossings at Blackmud Creek and Anthony Henday Drive, a new operations and maintenance facility south of Anthony Henday Drive, three utility complexes, and one traction power substation.
The project will construct two new LRT stations, one at Twin Brooks and one connecting to the Heritage Valley Transit Centre and Park & Ride just north of Ellerslie Road. It will also involve integrating with existing Capital Line systems, power supply, installation of communications systems, and environmental mitigation.
As soon as mobilization began in late 2024, the project team successfully shifted one of Edmonton’s busiest intersections to commence work on the LRT underpass in just two days with minimal disruption. This ensures traffic will continue to flow while all tunnelling activities are completed safely below.
At peak construction, the project will employ over 550 employees. Construction began in 2024 and is slated for completion in 2028.
By prioritizing innovation, community engagement, and a commitment to quality, Ledcor is building transit infrastructure that will support economic growth, accessibility, and environmental stewardship. These transit projects mark significant steps toward a more connected and sustainable future for both Metro Vancouver and Edmonton.
