Building modern campuses is just one part of the solution to Canada's skilled worker shortage. Ledcor also partners with post-secondary institutions to provide students with co-op placements and entry-level roles that provide practical experience and pathways to lasting careers.
Through job fairs, industry nights, skills competitions, and other campus events, Ledcor professionals give students a tangible sense of construction work and company culture. Initiatives like the BCIT practicum provide students with the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a project team member, often leading to full-time employment.
Ledcor backs up its on-campus engagement with scholarship support for technical education. Since 1991, we have awarded over 200 scholarships at NAIT in fields like Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Occupational Health & Safety. The Ledcor Korol Cup, a charity hockey tournament started by employees, has raised over $688,000 and funded 170 scholarships at NAIT, SAIT, and BCIT.
Hundreds of Ledcor employees have joined after completing their technical training, many beginning their careers through these programs. It is a win-win scenario: the students help bring fresh ideas, energy, and perspectives to our teams while Ledcor provides them with mentorship, guidance, and a solid start to their careers.
Nelson Navasero was awarded the Ledcor Innovation Scholarship at NAIT through the HS&E program. This introduced him to senior Ledcor employees in his field and resulted in his employment after completing his education. Since then, he has gained experience working on oil and gas projects for the Constructors group and later served as an HS&E Lead on a residential high-rise tower for the Construction group.
As a co-op student through SAIT, Jeremy Dinh spent 8 months on various sites learning about project coordination, document management, and sustainability practices. He also discovered a passion for estimating—something he had not previously considered. Upon completing his degree, he joined our Calgary team as an Estimator, where he continues to hone his skills working on a vast range of projects.
Natalia Chavarro was in her final semester at BCIT when she interned as a Project Coordinator, which provided her with valuable insights into construction management. After graduation, she joined our Vancouver team on the innovative BCIT Tall Timber Student Housing project, where she continues to develop key skills.
At Ledcor, we continue to partner with educational institutions to help bridge the skills gap by building modern learning environments and providing construction students with career pathways. This integrated approach benefits communities, students, and industries alike, and ensures a steady pipeline of qualified talent.
