Ledcor Projects Earn 11 VRCA Awards

October 19, 2012

Ledcor, and trades working on Ledcor projects, demonstrated the company's innovation and focus on sustainable building by taking home 11 awards, including Gold, at the 24th Annual Vancouver Regional Construction Association’s (VRCA) Awards of Excellence gala on October 17, 2012.  Ledcor was among BC’s top construction contractors honored at the event, which celebrates the use of innovative techniques, procedures and materials in the construction industry.

Ledcor brought home the Sustainable Construction Gold for the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre. Featuring an undulating green roof resembling an orchid, the building is targeting LEED® Platinum certification and Living Building status. It features a number of energy efficient and sustainable design elements, such as a green-roof, geothermal heating, solar panels, water capture system, and organic water purification system.

UniverCity’s Living Building Childcare Centre at SFU was awarded the Sustainable Construction Silver Award. The childcare center was Ledcor’s first Living Building project. To qualify for Living Building Challenge (LBC) Standard certification, a building must generate more energy than it uses, collect or recycle more water than it consumes and be built and operated using non-toxic and locally-sourced materials. Unlike other environmental standards that certify buildings based on design specifications, the Living Building Challenge BC approves buildings only after they have been occupied operational for 12 months. The UniverCity Childcare Centre opened in April 2012.

Silver was awarded to Ledcor in the General Contractor Project over $40 Million category for the IKEA Richmond project. The store features a geo-exchange heating and cooling system, a rooftop garden for staff to grow vegetables, and a mix of solar power, efficient lighting, occupancy sensors, skylights, and other measures to maximize energy efficiency.

Trades contractors working on Ledcor projects were also recognized at the awards ceremony, representing work on three Ledcor projects; the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre, IKEA Richmond and the Guildford Town Centre Expansion project.

The eight awards went to:

  • Keith Panel Systems Co. - Chairman’s Trade Award, VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre
  • Trotter & Morton Building Technologies - Mechanical Trade Contractor up to $3 Million Award, VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre
  • Bridge Electric - Electrical Contractor to $2 Million Award, VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre
