Ledcor Cares for Families of Sick Kids through Ronald McDonald House Northern Alberta

Ledcor is always looking for ways to build a positive legacy within the communities in which we work, and this giving spirit of Ledcor and our employees continues to be demonstrated in our work with Ronald McDonald House Northern Alberta (RMHNA).  Through a weekly lunch program sponsored by corporate donations and employee volunteerism as well as a corporate donation to their renovation project, Ledcor has saved families with sick kids more than $270,000 in hotel costs, food costs, laundry costs, and more.

"Families caring for their sick children at the hospital rarely take time to care for themselves, and yet it can make such a difference," said Martin Dugas, CEO Ronald McDonald House® Northern Alberta. "With Ledcor’s sponsorship, we are now able to provide nutritious meals brought by warm and friendly faces to our families when they need it most."

Our history with RMHNA dates back to 2008 when the House was in the planning stages of a major renovation project that would expand the number of rooms available to families from 16 to 32.  We donated $50,000 towards the expansion and were pleased to have one of the family rooms named as the “Ledcor Group of Companies” room, number 222. Since this room’s post-renovation completion in June of 2009, it has been occupied for 1,726 nights.  That has saved families with sick kids more than $250,000 in hotel costs. RMHNA meals programming, kids programming, and other in-House programs and services have also saved families significant expenditures in food costs, laundry costs, and more during their stay. These are the cost savings attributed only to room 222, a direct result of Ledcor’s support.

In 2013 we launched our new Employee Giving Campaign to support local children’s charities and reconnected with RMHNA, participating in a “day of caring” event to engage employees.  On that day, 30+ members of the Ledcor family volunteered at the House, making soup, sandwiches, and dessert and delivering the lunches to families at the House and at the Stollery Children’s Hospital located nearby.

The response from families and employees was overwhelming, and in May of 2014 Ledcor was honored to become the title sponsor of the ongoing “RMHNA Fuel for Families Powered by Ledcor” lunch program. This weekly program ensures that all families staying at the House receive nutritious lunches every Friday. Ledcor has committed $25,000 per year for three years to fund the lunch delivery program in addition to committing volunteers to the program.  There have been 50 lunch days since the beginning of the formalized lunch program, with 2,000 individual lunches served, resulting in a savings of over $20,000 to families with sick kids.

"Ledcor and its employees have a long history of supporting pediatric initiatives and helping families who are going through difficult times when their child is ill," said Tom Lassu, President, Ledcor Contractors Ltd. "We are thrilled that RMHNA gave us the opportunity to sponsor this program which we helped start as a volunteer initiative last fall. The strength and courage of these families is truly inspirational and we hope that providing a healthy lunch helps make an often long day a little easier."

Witnessing the courage and strength of the children and families is the inspiration that keeps our volunteers going. All of our volunteers are commended for their commitment and support, and thanks go to RMHNA for their leadership and passion.
