The twinned 36-kilometer (22 mile) stretch of Highway 63 north of Wandering River in Northern Alberta opened to the public November 5, 2012, more than eight months ahead of schedule. Ledcor’s use of new technologies contributed to the early completion of the safer, completely divided four-lane roadway.

This project presented an opportunity for Ledcor, supported by Alberta Transportation, to research a new and greener paving technology, called Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). WMA allows for paving and mixing at lower temperatures, cutting fuel consumption and decreasing the production of greenhouse gases compared to conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA).

For one portion of the construction, Ledcor was awarded our largest ever granular-base course and asphalt-paving project. More than 1.1 million tons of product was placed during the summer of 2012.

In total, Alberta Transportation plans to twin 240 kilometers (150 miles) of highway between Fort McMurray and the junction of Highway 55 near Grassland, at a total cost of $1 billion.
