Guildford Town Centre Expansion
Surrey, British Columbia
Guildford Town Centre has launched the second phase of its $280-million expansion and redevelopment project, and is seeking to become the first LEED® Gold certified shopping mall in Canada.
When construction work is completed in the summer of 2014, the mall will become one of Metro Vancouver’s largest shopping centres. In addition to 75 new stores and a new Walmart Supercenter, the expansion includes a 965-seat food court complemented by several restaurants, as well as new escalators, elevators, and updated décor.
With LEED Gold certification in sight for the expansion area, Ivanhoé Cambridge is relying on Ledcor’s proven record in green building. Ledcor is taking full advantage of recycled and locally sourced construction materials, and about 80 percent of the construction waste will be diverted for recycling. Thanks to upgraded systems throughout, the mall is expecting to reduce its energy use by 64 percent and water use by 40 percent. There will also be dedicated bicycle storage and charging stations for electric vehicles.
The redevelopment will contribute to the local economy, creating 4,000 jobs during the construction period and at least 750 new permanent retail jobs upon completion.
