Kentucky Information Highway Initiative

The Commonwealth of Kentucky

Kentucky, United States

Ledcor and joint venture partner Black & Veatch Corporation, through the KentuckyWired Operations Company, has been awarded the contract to design and build the KentuckyWired network for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

This project is a public-private-partnership (PPP or P3) formed by a consortium of partners, including Macquarie Infrastructure Developments LLC, First Solutions P3 Inc, and Ledcor, with total construction costs projected to be approximately $275 million US ($360 million CAD). Ledcor will also be responsible for operating and maintaining the KentuckyWired network to ensure its flawless operation over the next 30 years.
The KentuckyWired network will bring over 3,300 miles (5,300 km) of high-speed, high-capacity fiber optic Internet connectivity to all 120 counties. KentuckyWired will significantly improve connectivity, increase speeds and offer some of the fastest broadband capacity in the United States.

Connecting approximately 1,100 government and public facilities in addition to allowing for private sector access, the new network will help to break down geographic and financial barriers for education and economic development, helping connect Kentuckians to the world.

KentuckyWired is also unique in that it will be an "open access" network. This means cities, partnerships, private companies, or other groups may acquire access to these "middle-mile" lines. The network will not be providing "last mile" services or the lines that run to individual homes or businesses.
