UBC Life Sciences Centre

UBC Properties Trust

Vancouver, British Columbia

Ledcor began construction on the LEED® Gold certified UBC Life Sciences Centre in 2002. This five storey, 51,000 m2 (550,000 ft2) complex is UBC’s largest building as well as the largest post-secondary research facility in British Columbia. The $125 million centre is now home to the UBC medical school, anatomy teaching labs, Centre for Disease Modeling, and the Centre for Blood Research.

Due to its many sustainability features, the UBC Life Sciences Centre is one of the greenest buildings in British Columbia. Ledcor was able to recoup or recycle 80 percent or 1.3 million kg of waste materials that were produced during construction. The building also emits 1000 tons fewer green-house gases, consumes 28 percent less energy and 50 percent less water in comparison to other buildings of similar size.

Project Highlights

  • 80 percent of construction waste recycled or recouped
  • Largest LEED Gold certified building in BC
  • Erosion and sedimentation plan was implemented to minimize environmental damage during construction.
