UBC Bioenergy Research and Demonstration Facility

University of British Columbia

Vancouver, British Columbia

The Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility (BRDF) represents the first biomass cogeneration project created in North America. The facility is the first to clean and condition biomass into an engine fuel grade synthesis gas that’s injected into an internal combustion engine used to generate electricity.

Construction began in September of 2010, and was scheduled to be completed March 2012 in one phase, but after working closely with UBC and Nexterra (the contractor in charge of installation) the project was delayed due to Nexterra’s installation process, and subsequently completed August 2012 in 2 phases to help coordinate the equipment installation. Throughout the project, Ledcor dealt with and overcame a number of scope changes including: improved ventilation & back up power, unforeseen soil conditions, and asbestos containing pipe.
