Teck Acute Care Centre at BC Children's and BC Women's Hospitals

Provincial Health Services Authority

Vancouver, British Columbia

The eight-story, 59,400 m2 (640,000 sq ft) TECK Acute Care Centre (TACC) at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre provides much-needed space for the larger care teams and new technologies required to treat today’s chronic and more complex childhood illnesses.

The centre is targeting LEED Gold and includes medical/surgical inpatient units, an emergency department, medical imaging and procedural suites, a hematology and oncology department, and pediatric intensive care. It also has a high-risk birthing unit and neonatal intensive care unit for the BC Women’s Hospital.

Key features of the TACC include:
  • A design that emphasizes the single occupant patient rooms, noise reduction features, access to natural light and views of nature, resulting in an improved healing environment.
  • Minimizes the movement of patients, care providers, equipment and supplies to improve the patient experience and increase efficiency.
  • 231 spacious private patient rooms that include sleeping accommodations for family.
  • Medical/surgical inpatient rooms that include a bathroom with tub and shower, spacious cupboards, fridges and televisions.
  • The entire top floor of the hospital is designed for cancer patients. The air is HEPA-filtered for added infection control. The Oncology/Hematology/BMT Inpatient Unit has 27 private patient rooms, as well as a laundry facility, nutrition stations, and a kitchen for home-cooked meals. The Outpatient Clinic is equipped with 23 rooms adorned with i-spy murals.
  • Several playrooms, six gardens, and playful murals and artwork scattered throughout the building.
BC Children’s Hospital provides care for the most seriously ill or injured children and youth from across British Columbia and is a leading teaching and research facility. BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre is the only facility in BC devoted primarily to the health of women, newborns, and families, and is one of Canada’s largest and busiest maternity hospitals.

The TACC project was delivered in a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model with the Provincial Health Services Authority. The Affinity Partnerships consortium, led by Balfour Beatty and Ledcor, was awarded Design, Build, Finance and Maintain (30+ years) services.
