Ledcor was awarded the contract to build the Royal Alberta Museum, a brand new natural and human history museum right in the heart of downtown Edmonton.

The Ledcor Design-Build (Alberta) team of Ledcor, DIALOG, and Lundholm Associates Architects was selected following the evaluation of four proponents shortlisted for the project. An expert review panel, which included architectural and museum industry professionals, evaluated the proposals based on design, ability to deliver the project, and the best value for the budget. This provincial museum is well equipped for the future, with more room, accessibility, and public transit connections. 

After considering a number of plans to expand on the existing museum—which sits outside of the capital city’s core in the neighborhood of Glenora—the decision was made to move to a greyfield site closer to public transit routes and a number of other cultural institutions, such as the Art Gallery of Alberta, which was built by Ledcor and opened to the public in January 2010.

This modern, accessible museum also includes a spacious lobby, a cafe, a giftshop, a 250-seat theater, and outdoor terraces. At the core of the museum, a state-of-the-art climate-control system is designed to safeguard the museum's extensive collection, many of which are delicate historical artifacts.

Although the building is complete, the $340 million museum is not expected to open to the public until December 2017 due to the complex process of relocating the collection of 2.1 million pieces.
