Air Canada Hangar 5

Air Canada

Mississauga, Ontario

Air Canada’s new Hangar 5 is a state-of-the-art maintenance, storage and training facility that supports Air Canada’s growing operations at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
The project boasts the largest freestanding uninterrupted commercial hangar span in Canada—535 ft. (163 m.)  without support columns. With 127,000 sq. ft. (11,798 sq. m.) of space and a 77 ft. (23.5 m.) high ceiling, the new hangar can accommodate up to 5 wide-body aircraft at one time.
Work on such a large-scale building brought unique construction challenges. Ledcor’s project team collaborated with both the structural steel contractor and Ledcor’s Heavy Lift Team to meticulously plan the erection process for the main King Truss which required four separate multi-crane lifts to completely install the truss that weighs over 1,000 tons.
In addition to the hangar, the project includes a new airside apron, an annex that consists of an office area with 150 work stations, multiple training classrooms that can support 200 people, a large cafeteria that accommodates 100 staff, ample storage for materials and tools and a 6,000 lb. (2,721 kg.) freight elevator.
