As one of the largest projects in the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede’s history, the Agrium Western Event Centre is a state-of-the-art facility for western events, agriculture education, exhibition, and industry in Southern Alberta. The project consists of a 2,500-seat (31,250 sf) arena, four VIP suites, and 20,000 sf of exhibition space. The building is a three-storey structure which includes a dirt arena and livestock areas on the main floor, seating on the second floor, and the mezzanine space on the third level.
The unique design required a 200-foot wide curved steel structure to be erected on top of pre-cast panels, which posed a challenge for the consultants and contractors. Temporary bracing was installed to hold the panels and columns in place until the steel trusses were secured on top. Together with the subtrades and structural consultants, Ledcor developed a sequencing plan involving extensive inspections of each section to make sure it was structurally sound before the temporary bracing was removed and concrete slab floors were poured.
Despite delays incurred by this design challenge, having to work around the Oil & Gas Expo 2013, Stampede 2013, and the worst flooding in Calgary’s history, extensive collaboration between the client, consultants, subtrades and Ledcor made it possible to deliver the project in time for its Grand Opening on June 21, 2014.
