Fitzsimmons Creek Run-of-River Hydroelectric Project
Fitzsimmons Creek Investments Limited Partnership
Whistler, British Columbia
In 2010, Ledcor completed construction on the Fitzsimmons Creek Hydroelectric project in Whistler, British Columbia. This run-of-river plant harnesses energy from Fitzsimmons Creek by diverting partial water flows through a coanda style intake structure to a steel/high-density polyethylene penstock, then to generating equipment located in the powerhouse.
A partnership between Ledcor and Innergex Renewable Energy, the 7.5 MW facility started generating power in January 2011, and is currently meeting its power production targets while producing no net emissions. The project is able to produce 33.5 GWh – theoretically enough to power Whistler Blackcomb’s summer and winter operations for one year.
Taking one and a half years to complete, Ledcor was the general contractor for this design-build project, completing it six months ahead of schedule and within budget.
