Polyethylene 1 (PE1) Expansion Project

NOVA Chemicals

Joffre, Alberta

Ledcor was contracted by NOVA Chemicals in June of 2013 to construct a facility expansion known as the Polethylene 1 (PE1) Expansion Project.

The facility is one of the largest production complexes of its kind in the world, producing over 2.7 billion kilograms (six billion pounds) of ethylene and nearly 1.1 billion kilograms (2.5 billion pounds) of polyethylene annually.

With the addition of a third reactor, the expansion will increase polyethylene capacity at the Joffre, Alberta, complex by approximately 40 percent upon completion in 2016. The expansion will add a single-train, linear low-density-polyethylene unit, increasing capacity by 431 million kilograms (950 million pounds) per year.

Ledcor's onsite construction involves piling, earthworks, concrete foundations, and structural steel.

Our work also includes off-site pipe fabrication and assembly of piperack modules. The modules are transported from our Nisku facility via the Alberta heavy load corridor, upon reaching the entrance to the site they travel through the site’s operating rail yard to gain access to the project site.

Since the Joffre facility is fully operational during construction, coordination with NOVA Chemicals has been fundamental to optimizing our work while minimizing plant interference and community disruption. Following a protocol for permitted work and educating our workforce about the hazards associated with an operating plant has ensured construction progresses safely and productively.
