Fiber Optic Cable Installation
Iguigig to Levelock, Alaska
The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act designated $7.2 billion to expand broadband access and adoption in communities across the U.S. As part of this stimulus package, Ledcor was awarded the terrestrial construction associated with United Utilities Segment 4 fiber optic cable installation in Alaska.
The terrestrial construction stretches across 68 kilometers (42 miles) of frozen tundra in remote southwest Alaska. In order to operate in such challenging conditions, Ledcor purchased and deployed Tucker-Terra Sno-Cats® and other arctic-rated equipment. A remote camp was established to maintain production levels, and in efforts to minimize our overall environmental impact, Ledcor instituted daily helicopter service to and from site. Part of the installation required a substantial river crossing, which involved cutting deep ice and inserting a special submarine cable.
