This new facility for Acklands-Grainger—Canada’s largest distributor of industrial, safety, and fastener products—is one of their largest, consolidating both a branch and distribution centre.
At 10,000 square meters (110,000 square feet), the design-build project with architect Ware Malcomb was designed to be attractive and cost-effective within a challenging northern climate. The design incorporates form and function by merging the 7432 square meters (80,000 square feet) warehouse, 1858 square meters (20,000 square feet) split-level office, and the 3,000 square feet showroom that is complete with expansive curtain wall glazing and exposed ceilings that measures 9 meters high (30 feet). There is also a wash bay, multi-bay loading dock, and mezzanine.
One of the key design features of the facility is the envelope which utilizes the Murox panel system by Canam that was prefabricated in Quebec and shipped to build on site. The Murox panel installation helped reduce the total erection time by approximately 50 per cent; increased thermal resistance; eliminated the need for structural elements around the building perimeter, thus increasing its usable interior space; and, reduced overall construction costs.
Construction was completed in February 2015 and received full occupancy on March 11, opening to the public on March 30, 2015.
