Ledcor Earns VRCA Gold Award for Sustainable Construction

Ledcor has again demonstrated the company’s commitment to sustainable building in receiving the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) 2013 Gold Award in Sustainable Construction for the UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences building.

Ledcor was among British Columbia’s top construction contractors honored at the annual Awards of Excellence gala on October 17, an event which celebrates the use of innovative techniques, procedures and materials in the construction industry.

The UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences building is the new home of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the university and brings all of the faculty’s teaching, learning, research, and outreach under one roof for the first time. The six-floor, 250,000 sq.ft. building was built to LEED Gold standards by Ledcor, with 94 percent of construction waste diverted from landfills through recycling or salvage.

Inspired by tree roots excavated from the building site, the design addresses sustainability in several key areas, including transportation, energy, water, and materials, with a special focus on recycled and regionally sourced materials.

In this year’s VRCA awards competition, there were 42 total entrants and 38 projects considered. The total value of projects considered this year represented $1.1 billion of construction throughout the province.

With more than 700 members, the VRCA is BC’s largest and most inclusive regional construction association, representing union and non-union, general and trade contracting companies, manufacturers, suppliers and other professionals throughout the Lower Mainland from Hope to Whistler.
